Sino-US students unite in Shanghai jazz center music exchange

A delegation of students from the prestigious Harvard University of the US visited the Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai on Aug 19.

There, they met students from the Shanghai Huangpu Youth Art Activity Center and Gezhi High School – later singing the iconic Chinese folk song Jasmine Flower together.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai is the world's only branch of the Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York. In recent years, it has become an artistic landmark for jazz enthusiasts in Shanghai and across China.

During the event, members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai Big Band performed pieces like Kangding Love Song, The Moon Represents My Heart and Shanghai by Night – blending familiar Chinese melodies with jazz, creating a fusion of Eastern and Western musical cultures.

Students from Shanghai Huangpu Youth Art Activity Center presented a woodwind sextet, playing Love's Greeting and In That Remote Place

Their lyrical performance received praise from the American students, with one Harvard student remarking: "I didn't expect Chinese schools to have such a variety of extracurricular activities".

The Gezhi High School's string orchestra, which has won numerous awards both domestically and internationally, performed the String Quartet No 8

Inspired by the lively atmosphere, the visiting Harvard students couldn't resist joining in. After a break, they spontaneously sang the American classic Fly Me to the Moon, capturing a memorable moment at the center.

As the music of Jasmine Flower began to play, the American students joined the Chinese students on stage to sing the song together, bringing the event to a climax. 

Despite being from different countries, they found common ground through cultural exchanges, forging deep friendships.
