A group of exceptional mathematics teachers from Brazil started a 10-day training program in Shanghai on Sept 18, with the launch held at the UNESCO Teacher Education Center at Shanghai Normal University.

These teachers are the gold medalists of the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Professionals, or OBPM, selected from thousands of public schools in Brazil.

During their visit, they will observe, present and teach class at various prestigious schools in Shanghai, delving into the "secrets" of Shanghai's math education system.

They visited the Shanghai Experimental School where they observed classes and engaged in post-class discussions with their Chinese counterparts.

Their schedule remains packed – with upcoming visits to Fudan University, the High School Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Shanghai Foreign Language School Affiliated to Shanghai International Studies University for further exchanges.

This program is part of a series of events organized by the Consulate General of Brazil in Shanghai to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Brazil.

The influence of "Shanghai Mathematics" has reached Africa and South America, thanks to endorsements from the UK government. This was facilitated by the China-UK math teacher program (2014-2022), which improved UK math education and enhanced students' PISA scores.

Shanghai has been chosen as the sole pilot area for China's educational digital transformation and is also one of the first experimental zones for the nation's Smart Education Platform (csmartedu.cn).

In April 2023, the UNESCO Teacher Education Center at Shanghai Normal University collaborated with José Antonio Puppim de Oliveira – a senior expert from Brazil's think tank Getulio Vargas Foundation and the initiator of the math Olympiad – to select outstanding Brazilian math teachers for this professional development program in Shanghai.
