Based on the latest Essential Science Indicators (ESI) data, three universities in Shanghai are ranked among the top 200 globally, tying with Beijing for the highest number of institutions on the list in China.

The universities making the list are: Shanghai Jiao Tong University (39th), Fudan University (80th), and Tongji University (164th).

Over the past decade, Shanghai's universities have published 23,000 research papers with 437,000 citations, ranking fourth nationally, following Beijing, Guangzhou, and Nanjing.

Shanghai has 184 disciplines ranked in the top 1 percent of the ESI, placing it second nationwide. The city's top 0.1 percent disciplines are concentrated in 10 universities, with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Fudan University, and Tongji University having 11, eight, and six top-tier disciplines, respectively.

Despite these achievements, there is a significant disparity in research output and discipline strength among Shanghai's universities. While Shanghai Jiao Tong University ranks 39th globally, with most universities ranking beyond 5,000.

To address these gaps, Shanghai's universities must strategically focus on reducing internal disparities, increasing investment in discipline development, and enhancing the quality and quantity of top-tier disciplines.
