Green innovation takes center stage at 2024 SCIP+ contest

The registration results of the 2024 "SCIP+" Green Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship Contest have been announced, setting new benchmarks in both the quantity and quality of participating teams.

From October to November, the organizing committee will conduct preliminary and semi-final rounds online, leading up to a December final at the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park.

Three pioneering themes

This year's contest centers on "Future Materials, Future Energy, and Future Environment", motivating innovators and entrepreneurs to develop more sustainable solutions in materials, energy, and environmental management.

The diversity in project themes reflects the rapid industrial advancements in areas like new energy, where innovative materials are undergoing technological evolution and finding new application scenarios. Additionally, the emergence of technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence is significantly enhancing innovation in the chemical engineering field.

530 project submissions

This year, the contest saw a record-breaking 530 project submissions, marking its sixth consecutive year of growth. Notably, the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Group attracted 352 teams from universities, comprising 66 percent of the total entries. Additionally, 19 international startup teams joined, representing 4 percent of registrations.

132 esteemed universities

Participants hailed from 132 universities worldwide, including prestigious institutions such as Tsinghua University, Fudan University, and Tongji University, alongside global leaders such as the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, and Nanyang Technological University. This represents a 20 percent increase in participating universities compared to last year.

159 startup companies

A total of 159 startup companies participated in the contest, with over 72 percent being less than five years old and more than 60 percent yet to secure funding. The proportion of early-stage startups has reached a new high, demonstrating strong momentum compared to last year.
