Shanghai universities excel in Best Chinese Subjects Rankings

The 2024 Best Chinese Subjects Rankings were released by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy on Oct 15, highlighting graduate degree programs nationwide that rank in the top 50 percent. A total of 4,924 subject areas from 486 institutions were included in the lists.

ShanghaiRanking, a leading higher education evaluation organization, uses the top 3 percent or the top 2 positions nationwide as benchmarks for defining "China's Top Subjects". According to the latest data, 308 subject areas from 100 universities were designated as the country's top subjects.

Fudan University in Shanghai houses 14 top subjects, with five of them ranked first in the country in their respective categories. Shanghai Jiao Tong University boasts 12 top subjects, with clinical medicine ranked first nationwide. Tongji University and East China Normal University each have four top subjects, with Tongji's civil engineering and urban and rural planning, and ECNU's statistics and software engineering ranked first in the country. East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine each have two top subjects.

Shanghai leads the nation with 88 subjects ranked in the top 7 percent or top 3 positions and 132 subjects in the top 12 percent or top 4 positions. Among the 25 universities in Shanghai, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Fudan University have 50 and 40 subjects on the list, respectively, showcasing their academic strength.

In recent years, Shanghai has prioritized foundational disciplines such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, geography, and biology, optimizing subject offerings and advancing the development of top-tier subjects to achieve world-class standards.
