Shanghai university blends AI with traditional Chinese medicine
Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has established the College of Artificial Intelligence in Traditional Chinese Medicine, along with new majors that integrate artificial intelligence and traditional Chinese medicine starting in 2025.
At the start of the new academic year, senior students welcomed undergraduate freshmen with healthy beverages, like barley tea and mung bean and barley soup. Under their guidance, the newcomers completed registration, moved into their dormitories, and settled in, marking their first lesson at the university.
Freshman Yang Junhao, a student of the inaugural class of the Intelligent Medical Engineering Innovation Program, visited the newly established college. Yang expressed his excitement about the innovative combination of AI and TCM, which inspired him to choose this university.
Xu Gang, vice-dean of the college, emphasized their commitment to cultivating interdisciplinary talent in advancing digital TCM. The new six-year bachelor-to-master program emphasizes hands-on practice and innovation, aiming to build a high-level teaching and research platform for integrated future medicine.
In a rest area for parents, an AI-powered TCM smart mirror developed by the university draw much attention. Equipped with an intelligent recognition system, it is capable of analyzing facial and tongue images to generate a personalized TCM constitution report within three minutes, along with tailored health recommendations.
Nearby, student volunteers offered tuina services, or Chinese therapeutic massage, to parents. Freshmen also received specially designed "herbal lucky bags" containing TCM-themed dolls, mugwort massage hammers, and aromatic sachets.
