Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine launches Pudong Campus
Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine inaugurated its Pudong Campus on Sept 12, adding a new first-class higher education institution to the Pudong New Area.
The new campus marks the school's expansion from Huangpu to Pudong, signifying a comprehensive upgrade of its educational framework and a new milestone in its pursuit of becoming a world-leading medical school.
Located in the southwest corner of the Pudong International Medical Zone, the new campus, covering about 29 hectares, is designed around the cultural concept of "Inclusiveness and the Integration of East and West". It extends the school's century-old legacy while highlighting technological sustainability and medical humanities.
Focusing on the practical needs of faculty and students while supporting holistic development, the campus aims to create a smart, green, and human-centered environment that integrates teaching and research spaces, cultural exchange platforms, talent cultivation bases, and living facilities.
Blending Chinese and Western architectural styles, it features the Medical Lecture Hall, a historical core area, and a campus clock tower, establishing a garden-like academic sanctuary. Advanced laboratories meeting international standards provide faculty and research teams with efficient, safe, and interactive environments, while modern teaching spaces feature AI-driven future medical facilities that enable teachers and students to fully engage in medical education and innovation.
On the same day, the 2025 freshman orientation ceremony was held in the Tongcheng Lecture Hall. New students donned white coats and recited the medical student oath.
Fan Xianqun, vice president of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and dean of the School of Medicine, welcomed the 1,025 new undergraduates, 2,292 postgraduate students, and 110 students of the "SJTU Medical Class" enrolled this year.
The new campus has expanded the residential areas, and plans to implement a "one-stop" student community that combines mental health education, career planning, and student innovation initiatives. A live-in counselor system also ensures each residential building has a dedicated counselor to provide round-the-clock support and prompt support for students.
Beyond spatial expansion, the new campus is a milestone of the school's development strategy of multi-campus collaboration by leveraging the respective strengths of the Pudong, Huangpu, Hainan, and Chongming campuses. In addition, the "SJTU Medical Class" will be extended to other medical universities nationwide, promoting collaborative innovation in higher medical education.
With the aim of becoming a global leader in clinical medicine, the School focuses on major clinical and complex scientific challenges to promote the transformation of groundbreaking outcomes. It will further advance its "AI + Medicine" strategy to enhance medical innovations, cultivate top talent, and upgrade healthcare services.
The School is committed to addressing national strategic needs in life and health sciences, as well as key global sci-tech challenges. Starting with the Pudong Campus, it plans to integrate 14 national-level research and innovation platforms and gather clinical resources from 13 affiliated hospitals to establish the SJTU-SM "Medical Valley" technology transformation park.
By developing platforms for scientific achievement transformation, corporate R&D collaboration, and innovation project incubation, the school will explore new mechanisms for university-enterprise collaboration, creating a full chain from basic research and clinical validation to industrial application.
In addition, the school will strengthen cooperation with various industrial bases in Zhangjiang to drive original breakthroughs and product development, enhance the concentration and competitiveness of Zhangjiang's biomedical industry, and support Shanghai's goal of building a world-class biomedical innovation hub.
