Program introduction

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) offers over 100 graduate programs, taught either entirely in English or in Chinese, and recruits international students from around the world.

The standard duration for master's programs is two to three years, and for doctoral programs is three to four years.

Upon the completion of the prescribed training plan, the thesis evaluation and defense, and fulfillment of other program requirements, students will be awarded the corresponding graduation and degree certificates.

 

Eligibility

1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and hold a valid foreign ordinary passport.

Note: Whether an applicant possesses Chinese nationality in addition to a foreign nationality shall be determined by the nationality appraisal issued by the exit and entry administration department of the Chinese public-security authorities. Applicants who are determined to possess Chinese nationality or are otherwise deemed ineligible for the program during the application, admission, or enrollment process will have their application, admission, offer, or student status revoked.

2. Applicants should be in good physical and mental health, meeting the physical examination standards set by the country and the university. They shall show a friendly attitude towards China and be willing to abide by Chinese laws, regulations, and university rules. Applicants must have no criminal record or other violations of laws, regulations, or disciplinary codes.

3. Applicants for master's programs should hold a degree equivalent to a Chinese bachelor's degree. Applicants for doctoral programs should hold a degree equivalent to a Chinese master's degree.

4. Certain schools, departments, and majors may accept applicants with a bachelor's degree for direct admission to doctoral programs. For specific details, please refer to the program admission information of the respective faculties.

5. Applicants' proficiency in Chinese or English must meet the requirements specified in the Language Requirement for SJTU International Graduate Programs. Scan the QR code below for specific information.

Online application

Application period (Beijing time):

- Oct 15, 2025: Application system opens

- Dec 15, 2025: Deadline for the first round of Chinese Government Scholarship applications (apply via university)

- Feb 15, 2026: Deadline for the final round of Chinese Government Scholarship applications (apply via university)

- March 31, 2026: Deadline for Shanghai Government Scholarship and SJTU Scholarship applications

- May 31, 2026: Deadline for self-funded student applications

Application method:

Log in to the official SJTU Foreign Students Apply online system at http://apply.sjtu.edu.cn, fill in the application information, upload the required documents, and submit the application.

 

Application materials

1. Academic credentials: Provide scanned copies of your degree certificates. Master's program applicants must submit their original bachelor's degree certificate. Doctoral program applicants must submit their original master's degree and bachelor's degree certificates. Applicants who have not yet graduated at the time of application should submit an official letter from their current university stating the expected graduation date.

Note: Before online registration, all 2026 students must obtain a bachelor's or master's degree recognized by China (from domestic institutions) or a Certificate of Accreditation and Evaluation of Foreign Academic Degrees issued by the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange (for overseas institutions). Failure to provide the required certificates will result in the cancellation of admission.

2. Academic transcripts: Submit scanned copies of your transcripts. Master's program applicants must submit undergraduate transcripts. Doctoral program applicants must submit both undergraduate and graduate transcripts. All transcripts must be complete and authentic.

3. Language proficiency proof: Refer to the Language Requirement for SJTU International Graduate Programs for specific standards.

4.Passport: Submit a clear scanned copy of the personal information page of a valid ordinary passport. If the passport's validity is less than 12 months from the registration date, please renew it and use the new passport for the application.

5. ID photo: JPG format, less than 200 KB, with pixels no fewer than 295×413.

6. Personal statement and study plan.

7. Two letters of recommendation: provide two recommendation letters from associate professors or above, or from senior professionals in related academic fields.

8.Supervisor's letter of acceptance (for specific schools/programs):

Applicants to the following programs must contact a potential supervisor in advance and obtain an acceptance letter before submitting their application:

  • For doctoral programs:

Note: Application documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be translated into Chinese or English by a certified translation agency. Submit the scanned copies of both the original and translated versions.

 

Fees

Application fee: 800 yuan (about $115). Please verify all application materials before payment. The application fee is non-refundable and non-transferable. Payment must be made in RMB or USD. You can choose either an online payment or a bank transfer through the online application system.

Tuition: Please refer to the SJTU 2026 International Graduate Programs Catalogue for specific tuition standards.

 

Enrollment

Enrollment begins in September 2026. Admitted students must complete online registration and on-site registration in accordance with the Admission Notice and the Guide for SJTU 2026 International Students.

 

Scholarships

SJTU offers a range of scholarship opportunities for outstanding international students:

Doctoral programs: SJTU Fellowship, Chinese Government Scholarship, Shanghai Government Scholarship, and SJTU Scholarship.

Master’s programs: CGS, SGS, SJTU Scholarship, SJTU Tuition Waiver Scholarship, and School/College Scholarships.

1. Scholarship eligibility

- Meet the eligibility criteria for SJTU's international graduate programs.

- Not receiving funding from any other scholarship.

- Master’s applicants must be under 35 years old.

- Doctoral applicants must be under 40 years old.

2. Scholarship application channels

Eligible applicants may only choose to apply through one of the two channels:

- Via SJTU

- Via Chinese embassies and consulates. Eligible applicants may choose only one channel.

(1)  Applying through SJTU (Type B)

Eligible applicants should apply through the official SJTU online system and select the "Apply for Scholarship through SJTU" (Type B). The agency code for SJTU is 10248. After the deadline, the university will make a comprehensive evaluation and determine scholarship levels. Applicants must complete the corresponding scholarship application procedures within the timeframe specified by the university.

Note: If an applicant is not recommended for the CGS Scholarship, they will be automatically considered for other available scholarships, including SGS, SJTU, or School/College Scholarships.

(2) Applying through an embassy or consulate (Type A):

Eligible applicants are advised to apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship (Type A) through the Chinese embassy or consulate in their home country.

Note: Applicants applying through this channel must also complete the online application on the university's website, following the application guidelines.

3. Scholarship notice

Applicants can check their scholarship results via http://apply.sjtu.edu.cn. The university will not issue separate written notifications regarding scholarship results.
