Higher education consultancy ShanghaiRanking released its 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities on Aug 15.

Among the 1,000 research universities on the list, 234 are in the Chinese mainland, with 16 ranking among the world's top 100, three more than last year.

Six universities from the Chinese mainland remain in the world's top 50: Tsinghua University ranked 18th globally, the highest position in Asia, followed by Peking University at 22nd, Zhejiang University at 24th, Shanghai Jiao Tong University at 27th, University of Science and Technology of China at 39th, and Fudan University at 41st.

In addition to Shanghai's two top-100 universities, the other institutions from Shanghai that made the list are Tongji University, East China Normal University, East China University of Science and Technology, ShanghaiTech University, Shanghai University, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Donghua University, Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai Ocean University, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Naval Medical University, and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.
