Ballet troupe celebrates friendship between Shanghai, Queensland
The Shanghai Ballet gave five performances of the classic ballet The Lady of the Camellias at the Queensland Performing Arts Center in Brisbane from Dec 5 to 8.
The performances were to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the friendship city relationship between Shanghai and Queensland, Australia.
The shows ran under the memorandum of cooperation between the Shanghai Ballet and the Queensland Ballet and aimed to advance cultural and artistic exchanges between the two regions. About 10,000 audience members enjoyed the performances.
Through graceful choreography and deeply expressive performances, Shanghai Ballet told a romantic tale, with every scene evoking the richness of an oil painting.
Combining Eastern influences with the grace of ballet, the production drew media attention all over the world. Audiences from nearby cities filled the theater, sharing their excitement about a truly memorable evening.
Xin Ya, a Chinese Australian who flew in from Melbourne, shared that she was deeply moved by the delicate emotions and love story portrayed by the lead dancers.
Shanghai Ballet's Camellias was based on the novel of the same title by French playwright Alexandre Dumas (1824-95) and choreographed by British artist Derek Deane.
