French art meets Jinshan farmer painting in Shanghai
The exhibition titled French Lishui Fusion vs Jinshan Native Palette — When French Art Meets Jinshan Farmer Painting and Lishui Barbizon Painting recently opened at the Jinshan Museum in Shanghai's Jinshan district.
The exhibition showcases over 100 artworks of the Barbizon School, the "Lishui Barbizon painting", and the Jinshan farmer painting.
Originating in 19th-century France, the Barbizon School emphasized naturalism and realism in landscape painting, with artists from far and wide traveling to the village of Barbizon to engage in open-air painting.
Inspired by similar ideals, modern-day artists in Lishui, Zhejiang province, have developed the Lishui Barbizon paintings, drawing creative energy from the tranquil scenery along the Oujiang River.
The exhibition features live interpretations by artists from Jinshan and Lishui. Through their paintings, both Chinese and French artists expressed a shared appreciation for beauty and a deep understanding of cultural heritage.
Visitors have the opportunity to appreciate the artistic fusion between China and France as well as the cultural exchanges between Jinshan and Lishui.
The exhibition is part of an ongoing series of cultural collaboration initiatives. In August 2024, the Center for Europe and Africa of China International Communications Group signed a framework agreement for exchange and cooperation with the Jinshan district.
Shanghai established a friendship city relationship with Marseille, France, in 1987. The exhibition further enhances exchanges between Shanghai and France.
