Shanghai, Zagreb sign memorandum to deepen friendship city ties

Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng met with Tomislav Tomasevic, mayor of Zagreb, Croatia, and the two cities signed a memorandum of cooperation covering the 2026 to 2029 period on Dec 22.

Gong said that since establishing their friendship city ties in 1980, Shanghai and Zagreb have achieved fruitful cooperation.

He called for closer exchanges in basic research and talent development, as well as deeper mutual learning in urban planning, urban renewal, and city governance.

He also expressed hopes that exchanges and cooperation in youth programs, cultural heritage, and the arts will be further expanded.

Tomasevic, on his first visit to China, said he was honored to experience Shanghai's impressive architecture, advanced scientific achievements, and the historical records of exchanges between Shanghai and Zagreb at the Shanghai History Museum.

He noted that Zagreb is committed to developing into an open and inclusive international city, with many development goals closely aligned with those of Shanghai, and expressed willingness to deepen cooperation and further strengthen the friendship between the two cities.
