The Fourth People's Hospital Affiliated to Tongji University hosted a health-themed event on Feb 28, promoting weight management and healthy living while providing participants with an immersive introduction to traditional Chinese medicine.

Among the attendees were five international students from East China Normal University, who arrived in traditional Hanfu attire. Under the guidance of doctor Cao Yanjun, the students took turns experiencing TCM bone-setting therapy and pulse diagnosis.

"Chinese bone-setting is amazing. My neck instantly felt relaxed," said Bjorn Guillermo Ho-Asjoe, a student from Suriname. He and his classmates experienced TCM treatments for the first time at the hospital.

During his session, Cao gently manipulated Bjorn's cervical spine. A slight movement accompanied by a subtle "crack" made Bjorn's initially tense expression transform into one of surprise and relief. "I feel so much more relaxed, like my energy channels have been unblocked. And it didn't hurt at all," he said.

His classmates also tried bone-setting, and one student named Mari expressed her excitement about the experience. "This is our first time experiencing TCM, and we wanted to wear traditional clothing to immerse ourselves in Chinese culture," she noted.

Cao tailored the treatments to the students' lifestyles. "As students, they spend long hours studying, which can lead to neck and spine strain. That's why I introduced them to bone-setting first," he said. The doctor then did pulse-taking for the students.

While examining Horvath's pulse, Cao inquired: "Does your family have a history of heart problems?" Horvath was shocked — his father indeed had heart disease. Cao explained that his pulse suggested a potential heart condition, though he showed no obvious symptoms due to his young age.

"TCM is truly incredible. I never mentioned my father's condition, yet the doctor identified it just by checking my pulse. I'm definitely going to follow his advice," Horvath said.

Cao noted that research has shown certain differences in physiology between Chinese and foreign individuals.

"Foreign students tend to exhibit more heat-related symptoms compared to the generally milder constitutions of Chinese people," he explained. He advised the students to avoid excessive cold foods, soak fruits in warm water before eating, and manage stress effectively. The students found the experience enlightening and vowed to adopt healthier habits.
