Is a first-year employee eligible for annual leave?
To be eligible for paid annual leave, an employee must have worked for the company continuously for over one year. Employees who have recently graduated and started their first job are not eligible for annual leave until their second year, when they meet the requirement. The number of annual leave days can be calculated by the method below.
Calculation method
(Disregard any decimal points)
(Number of calendar days remaining in the current year÷365) × Total number of annual leave days entitled for the year
Example
David, a new graduate, starts working on Sept 1, 2024. By Aug 31, 2025, he will have completed one year of employment. The remaining calendar days in 2025 after Aug 31 amount to 122 and David is entitled to five annual leave days for the whole year. Based on the calculation (122÷365)×5=1.67, David will be eligible for one day of annual leave in 2025.
