The residence permit is proof that you live in China. You need to apply for your residence permit within 30 days of entry.

Complete registration on International Services Shanghai.

Log into the website of Government Online-Offline Shanghai.

Choose the type of residence permit you wish to apply for, such as a Residence Permit for Work or a Residence Permit for Reunion.

If you choose Residence Permit for Work, for example, then select the specific type of Residence Permit for Work you desire, such as one-year, two-year or three-year.

Choose the service center location where you would like to arrange the issuance of your residence permit.

Fill in your personal information. 

Select the service center location, date, and time slot for you to complete the procedures.

You could also make an appointment for applying for a residence permit at WeChat mini-program "随申办 (Suishenban)".

Search "随申办 (Suishenban)" at WeChat mini-program, select the "Exit-Entry Affairs" and then the Visa/stay permit/residence permit.
