Global campers promote cultural exchange at mini world expo
A celebration of cultural diversity unfolded at Shanghai Datong High School on July 18, as part of the 19th Shanghai International Youth Interactive Friendship Camp, which opened on July 16 and will run through July 25.
Representing 20 countries such as Australia, Burkina Faso, China, Colombia, Nepal, New Zealand, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States, a total of 125 teenagers came together to share their nations' unique traditions and customs at the mini World Expo held in the school's gymnasium.
The young ambassadors showcased traditional artifacts, interactive displays, and captivating performances at their country booths, embracing their heritage through song, dance, and engaging presentations. Adorned in colorful traditional attire, they exuded enthusiasm in promoting their cultures to an eager audience.
Chinese students from host families also actively participated, joining the international campers in sharing laughter and treats, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie among the diverse group.
"It's so amazing," said Australian camper Ashton Bedoya. "We're in Shanghai, halfway across the world from where we are, but then we've got 20 countries that are all here together... I feel like it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience."
The expo organizer highlighted the event's importance as a cornerstone of the camp, providing a valuable platform for young individuals to learn from each other and cultivate intercultural understanding.
Established in 2005, the camp is organized by the Shanghai People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the Shanghai Youth Federation. In the coming days, the youth participants will continue their exploration of Chinese cities, savor traditional cuisine, and engage in a variety of cultural activities, enriching their exchange experience.
