Shanghai has established a total of 83 standardized community dental clinics, providing dental treatment and a selection of other medical services for residents.

With an average area of about 200 square meters and staff of around five physicians and four nurses, each clinic offers basic dental treatment such as dental fillings, root canal therapy, pit and fissure sealing, periodontal cleaning, tooth extraction, and denture restoration. Some clinics also offer expanded services such as thermal gutta-percha fillings, orthodontic treatment, and dental implant restoration.

The dental clinic at the Changfeng Street Baiyu Community Health Service Center in Putuo district, for example, is equipped with facilities such as panoramic X-ray machines, dental film machines, ultrasonic scalers, apex locators and pulp vitality testers.

The head of the center mentioned that the clinic not only provides basic services such as fillings, extractions, and crowns, but also covers periodontal and orthodontic treatment, meeting the oral healthcare needs of residents in the area. The center has also developed a herbal mouthwash solution known as Yulu, which has proven popular among residents for its efficacy in treating recurrent oral ulcers.

An official from the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health stated that by the end of 2025, the city will further increase standardized community dental clinic coverage. It plans to select a group of high-quality facilities to lead the development of dental diagnosis, treatment, and health services.

By the end of 2030, Shanghai is expected to achieve full coverage with its standardized community dental clinics, allowing more residents to enjoy convenient access to oral health services right at their doorstep, he added.
