Fengcheng Laochengxiang Historical and Cultural Block
The Fengcheng Laochengxiang Historical and Cultural Block in Fengcheng town, Fengxian district, is home to the only walled city in Shanghai that has been preserved to this day.
The walled city blends the architectural styles of water towns in northern China and Jiangnan (the region south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River).
Today, Fengcheng Laochengxiang Historical and Cultural Block retains the ancient layout of the moat and cross streets, and efforts have been made to preserve, restore, and reconstruct historical landmarks like the Wanfo (10,000 Buddha) Pavilion.
Wanfo Pavilion in Fengcheng town is an ancient temple from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Serene and majestic, it offers a tranquil escape with ginkgo trees, echoing bells, and a Zen atmosphere. It is located at No 9 Wanfoge Road, Fengxian district and open daily from 8 am to 5 pm.
The block also features remnants of the garrison headquarters of the invading Japanese troops, war sites, and historical relics, highlighting its role in safeguarding Shanghai's culture and history.
