Liantang Historical and Cultural Block is a traditional Jiangnan-style area in the suburbs of Shanghai, characterized by a combination of bustling commercial streets and waterside areas.

The total land area of the historical and cultural block is 57.5 hectares. The core protected area consists of the historical streets on both sides of the east-west oriented Shihe Creek in the Liantang Ancient Town and the Lihe Creek.

The Liantang Ancient Town runs along both banks of the Shihe Creek, forming two streets — Shangtang and Xiatang — with one on either side. It features a typical Jiangnan water town layout with old houses and narrow lanes. Natural waterways crisscross the town, and various traditional Jiangnan water town buildings such as temples, monasteries, churches, and guild halls are well-preserved. The residents of the town have also largely maintained their traditional way of life.

The ancient town buildings feature white walls and dark gray roof tiles, with occasional Western decorations. The buildings are mainly made of brick and wood, and largely retain their original aesthetic.

It is said that during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms (907-960) periods, the governor of Gaozhou in the Min Kingdom, Zhang Zijun, and his wife, Madam Lian, lived here, which is why the town was once called "Zhang Lian Tang".

The town and its surrounding areas have a rich history, having been part of various kingdoms and administrative regions throughout different dynasties.
