A new community space designed for international residents opened over the weekend in Xujing town, Qingpu district, marking a shift from online information platforms to in-person neighborhood services.

The Lidoway CNS Community Hub, located at Lidoway Town Center Plaza, spans 54 square meters. Developed as a joint initiative between City News Service and Qingpu district, it offers weekly in-person consultations on visas, residence permits, healthcare, schooling, and social insurance.

Xujing is home to around 14,800 foreign residents from 125 countries and regions, drawn by its international schools, green spaces, and proximity to Zhujiajiao Ancient Town.

Beyond administrative support, the hub will host regular activities including fitness groups, pet owner meetups, and a secondhand market. Seasonal cultural events, such as qingtuan-making for Qingming Festival and sachet crafting for Dragon Boat Festival, will provide residents with hands-on experiences.

Nearby institutions, including Western International School of Shanghai, will also contribute to programme development.

The opening event featured a bazaar with local vendors and expat entrepreneurs, alongside the launch of a new cultural route showcasing the district's heritage sites and water towns.

Nari Elhadidi, an Egyptian artist showcasing her sterling silver jewelry at one of the stalls, discovered the space for the first time that day.

"It's not too far from where I live, and it's a great discovery," she said. "There are plenty of restaurants, open spaces, and a pedestrian street where kids can run around. With so many pets as well, it's a lovely space".

The initiative forms part of a broader effort by Shanghai to integrate its international residents more fully into the fabric of the city.

"What I would look forward to is an opportunity for connection," said Jeremy Williams, headmaster of Western International School of Shanghai. "Welcoming people and building friendships and connections from all over the world".
