Shanghai Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center (Shanghai Eye Hospital) is inviting outstanding international talent in natural sciences, engineering, and technology to apply for the 2025 Excellent Young Scholars Fund (Overseas) of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

 

Program overview

The fund aims to attract accomplished overseas researchers, including foreign nationals, in natural sciences and engineering to conduct independent research in China. It supports young scholars in advancing their careers and contributing to global scientific innovation.

 

Eligibility criteria

  • Born on or after Jan 1, 1985.
  • Hold a doctoral degree.
  • Have held a formal teaching or research position at an overseas university, research institute, or corporate R&D center for at least 36 consecutive months after earning their doctoral degree and before April 15, 2025.
  • Applicants with exceptional achievements and a doctoral degree earned overseas may be eligible for reduced work experience requirements.
  • Applicants must not have taken up full-time employment in China, except for those who began working in China on or after Jan 1, 2024. Upon receiving funding approval, applicants must resign from any overseas positions and commit to full-time work in China for no less than three years.

 

Specialized areas of need

  • Talent specializes in rare and complex ophthalmic diseases, cutting-edge technologies, and translational medicine research.
  • Talent in various medical specialties or interdisciplinary fields focused on enhancing the quality development of ophthalmology and improving medical technologies.

The above requirements are based on the 2024 guidelines. The official 2025 requirements will be determined by the 2025 guidelines issued by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. For updates, visit:

  • Priority appointment at Tongji University and the hospital, subject to eligibility.
