Academy seeks research project managers globally
The Shanghai Academy of Science and Technology is inviting global talent to join as R&D project managers, leading pioneering research in frontier technologies and fostering the growth of emerging industries.
The project managers are expected to set five-to-10-year goals, chart roadmaps, and build cross-disciplinary teams. They will oversee projects throughout the full lifecycle while seeking solutions to critical technological challenges.
They will also be tasked with connecting research with market needs, advancing the commercialization of scientific discoveries, and nurturing industries with the potential to reshape the future.
Eligibility
Education and fields of expertise
Applicants should hold a PhD in science or engineering and be under 45 years old. Exceptions on age and education level may be made for outstanding candidates.
Focus areas include frontier technologies and future industries, particularly next-generation IT and intelligent technologies, biomedicine and future health, scientific instruments and advanced equipment, new materials and manufacturing, quantum science, new energy, and aerospace and marine technology.
Work experience
Technical background: Applicants should have over 10 years of experience in R&D or product development at a university, research institute, or leading enterprise. They should have led projects in technology commercialization or industrialization, be proficient in at least two disciplines, and demonstrate strong cross-disciplinary integration skills.
Management background: Candidates should bring proven experience in managing major science and technology projects. They must be able to integrate innovation resources, build high-level teams, and drive follow-on development of research outcomes and breakthroughs in core technologies.
Tasks
Full-life cycle project management
- Oversee the entire life cycle of scientific and technological projects, managing key phases such as topic selection and feasibility assessment, planning, resource allocation, progress tracking, and quality supervision to ensure efficient and orderly project execution.
- Based on actual progress, adjust funding allocation, external resource coordination, strategic pivots, budget increases, or project termination to achieve precise and dynamic management.
- Drive the generation of no fewer than three disruptive technological innovations or the completion of no fewer than three engineering validations for critical "chokepoint" technologies.
Industry-research collaboration
- Integrate and mobilize resources from government, industry, academia, research institutions, and investors, fostering partnerships among universities, innovative enterprises, and investment organizations.
- Form competitive yet collaborative cross-disciplinary teams to bridge the gap between technical language and market barriers, translating industry challenges into targeted R&D tasks with clearly defined scientific problems and key technologies for agile development.
Technology commercialization
- Identify high-value research outcomes and develop market-driven transformation strategies through concept validation, business model design, and resource integration.
- Bridge the gap between lab and industry, and ensure scalable applications.
Application
What to prepare
Candidates should submit the following materials based on their research direction:
- A personal resume including education, work experience, and a list of major research outcomes, along with a copy of an ID card or equivalent document, such as a foreign residence permit or military officer's certificate, and copies of academic degree certificates.
- Materials proving expertise and capability, such as representative papers, technical reports, patents, or awards.
- A proposed "three-year action plan" outlining research goals and strategies in a chosen field or direction related to future industries.
