Putuo launches grand event to celebrate Dragon Boat Festival
Shanghai's Putuo district kicked off a special event on May 25 — called the "Along the Creek: Dragon Boat Festival Experience" — at the Tian'an 1000 Trees commercial complex.
Running to June 2, the event recreates the bustling scenes of the painting Along the River During the Qingming Festival by Zhang Zeduan, a court painter of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), through two themed markets.
At one market in the Tian'an 1000 Trees complex, visitors can stroll through elaborate setups featuring dragon boat races, river cruises, interactive games and cultural performances — all set against the scenic backdrop of Suzhou Creek.
With over 60 stalls inspired by Northern Song Dynasty aesthetics, the event integrates traditional artistry with modern commercial vibrancy.
Lanterns hang overhead as crowds gather to play pitch-pot, try their hand at shuttlecock kicking and poetry relays, or enjoy folk art experiences such as kite painting and sachet making. Food stalls offer traditional snacks, attracting long queues of both locals and tourists.
In addition, to celebrate its mid-year sales campaign, Tian'an 1000 Trees is offering discounts across categories including fashion, sportswear, beauty and dining.
What's more, on-site lucky draws give participants the chance to win exclusive festival-themed prizes, adding another layer of excitement.
Elsewhere, at Mengqingyuan Eco Theme Park, another market offers a parallel experience with a mix of water-based dragon boat competitions and land-based cultural zones.
Over 30 stands highlight regional cuisine, handmade crafts and performances such as interactive lion dance dramas and immersive role-playing adventures.
At one of the booths, a South Korean resident and his family made several playful attempts to hook a rice dumpling using a rod with a string.
"We've lived in Shanghai for years, but this is our first time experiencing such a lively and interactive Dragon Boat Festival," he said.
"It's a great way for our kids to learn about Chinese traditions while having fun," he added.
