Shanghai's Pudong New Area will launch 465 major construction projects in 2024 with a record annual investment of approximately 165.6 billion yuan ($23.01 billion), announced the Pudong New Area Construction and Transportation Commission, at a ceremony on March 14.

The plan includes the initiation of 123 projects and the completion of 86 projects throughout the year. Notably, the construction of a significant integrated transportation hub, known as the Dongfang Hub, or the Eastern Hub, is a key focal point.

The Eastern Hub aims to connect the ongoing Shanghai East Railway Station project with various transportation modes, including aviation, national railways, urban railways, and metro systems, fostering greater integration within the Yangtze River Delta region.

In addition to the Eastern Hub, the construction plan encompasses projects across four key sectors: core industries and key technologies, modern infrastructure, ecological development, and people's well-being. These projects include the X-ray free electron laser facility project, the eastward extension of Shanghai Metro Line 21, the construction of the phase I key ecological corridor circling the district, and the establishment of the Zhoupu Nursing Home.

In 2023, Pudong New Area achieved an annual fixed asset investment of 160.8 billion yuan for its major projects, demonstrating significant progress across various industrial, municipal infrastructure, social investment, and regional development initiatives.

As of February, Pudong New Areahad already invested 22.8 billion yuan in its 465 major construction projects planned for the year, with 20 projects commenced and seven completed.
