Shanghai Fashion Week opens with focus on sustainability, innovation
Shanghai Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2026 opened on Oct 9, setting the stage for a season that blends bold design innovation with a deepening commitment to sustainability.
The main venue at Xintiandi has been reimagined under the concept of a "magic cube", symbolizing multidimensional creativity and renewal. Building on the sustainable runway model first launched last year, this season's event maintains a material recycling rate above 90 percent while introducing modular structures and dynamic visual systems. The result is a striking, day-to-night spatial transformation that enhances the viewing experience while reducing single-use materials, reflecting the event's environmental commitment.
The opening day featured five major runway shows, spotlighting both established Chinese designers and international labels, each presenting a distinct narrative of contemporary fashion:
- Senseaweek explored the idea of "wearable stories", emphasizing emotional storytelling through design.
- RuirUiruI drew inspiration from the phases of the moon, channeling fluid motion and poetic introspection.
- AS Dalio celebrated the athletic grace and inner strength of modern Chinese women through exquisite craftsmanship.
In addition, bringing the spirit of the runway into the streets, Shanghai Fashion Week will debut its "fashion weekend" from Oct 18 to 19 on Yongyuan Road, a new cultural landmark in Jing'an district. Under the theme of The Good Old Days, the event will bring together brands such as Attempt, Sagrada Madre, and Forever 21, alongside local designers and creative talent.
The weekend will feature pop-up stores, lifestyle markets, product launches, and charity events, creating a multidimensional retail and cultural experience that bridges fashion, community, and sustainability.
Attendees will be able to enjoy "see-now-buy-now" opportunities, while initiatives like the Star Bunny Love autism care program, celebrating its 14th anniversary, will host charity sales and eco-themed runway shows supporting art therapy and medical care for children with autism.
