Report: Shanghai excels in tech innovation

Shanghai is among the world's top five most innovative cities, according to a recent report by the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of Shanghai on the 2024 global metropolitan sci-tech innovation capacity assessment.

The top 10 cities in the overall ranking are: Boston-Cambridge, Beijing, New York, London, Shanghai, Paris, San Francisco-San Jose, Hong Kong, Seattle, and Shenzhen.

The report evaluates sci-tech innovation capabilities across four categories: agglomeration, excellence, growth, and influence.

Shanghai ranks second globally in sci-tech growth capability. The city has made significant strides in 10 emerging technologies, namely artificial intelligence, blockchain, hydrogen energy, graphene, autonomous driving, gene editing, precision medicine, quantum technology, mRNA vaccines, and immersive experiences.

Annually, the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of Shanghai identifies 10 emerging technologies of global interest. Shanghai notably leads in the growth rate of patents in these technological domains, with the number of patent holders ranking first.
