Shanghai, China's largest economic center, has made remarkable achievements over the years, boosting its contribution to the national economy and enhancing its global influence. In 2023, the municipal GDP reached 4.72 trillion yuan. Imports and Exports reached 7.73 trillion yuan, accounting for 18.5 percent of the national total.

International Financial Center

Shanghai, the cradle of China's modern finance industry, has been striving to become an international financial center. In 2023, the total trading volume of Shanghai's financial markets reached a new high of 3,373.6 trillion yuan, ranking first in the world. Shanghai's renminbi cross-border settlement exceeded 20 trillion yuan, accounting for more than 40 percent of the national total and maintaining its leading position in China.

International Trade Center

Shanghai is accelerating its efforts to build an international trade center. In 2023, Shanghai's ports accounted for 3.6 percent of the world's total trade volume, placing the city at the top of global trade for the second consecutive year. At the same time, Shanghai's retail sales of consumer goods soared to an impressive 1.85 trillion yuan.

International Shipping Center

Shanghai's port has consolidated its position as an international shipping hub, with the most container routes, destinations and daily vessel frequency among mainland cities. Shanghai Port has maintained its position as the world's top container port for 14 consecutive years, handling a record 49.16 million twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, in 2023. The cargo and mail throughput of Shanghai airports remains the third-highest in the world.

International Science and Technology Innovation Center

Shanghai is striving to become a global leader in science and technology innovation, as well as a top performer in China and the world. According to the Global Innovation Index 2023 issued by the World Intellectual Property Organization, the Shanghai-Suzhou cluster improved its ranking by one spot, placing fifth among the world's top 100 science-technology clusters.
