International Economic Center

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012, Shanghai has made continuous efforts to establish itself as an international economic center. The city's GDP surpassed 5 trillion yuan ($688.4 billion) in 2024, maintaining its leading position among China's economic centers.

International Financial Center

Shanghai, the cradle of China's modern finance industry, has been striving to become an international financial center. In 2024, the total turnover of Shanghai's financial markets reached 3,650 trillion yuan ($5002.51 trillion), an increase of 8.2 percent year-on-year.

International Trade Center

Shanghai is accelerating its efforts to build an international trade center. The city's total trade volume surpassed 11 trillion yuan ($1.51 trillion) for the first time last year, reaching 11.07 trillion yuan and marking a 3.9 percent year-on-year increase.

International Shipping Center

Shanghai's port has consolidated its position as an international shipping hub, with the most container routes, destinations and daily vessel frequency among mainland cities. Shanghai Port has maintained its position as the world's top container port for 15 consecutive years, handling a record 51.506 million twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, in 2024. It became the first in the world on Dec 22, 2024, to cross the 50-million-TEU mark in annual container throughput.

International Science and Technology Innovation Center

Shanghai is striving to become a global leader in science and technology innovation, as well as a top performer in China and the world. In the Global Innovation Index 2024 by the World Intellectual Property Organization, the Shanghai-Suzhou Cluster ranks fifth among the world's "Best Technology Clusters", with its position continuing to ascend.
