Born in Wunijing, part of today's Xuhui district, Huang Daopo traveled in her youth to Hainan province, where she learned advanced local weaving techniques. After returning to her hometown, she shared this knowledge and went on to revolutionize cotton-textile tools, transforming the textile industry across the Jiangnan region and giving a strong boost to the local economy. Fabrics produced using her improved techniques later traveled along the Maritime Silk Road to Asia, Europe, and beyond, earning widespread acclaim.

Wunijing cotton-textile craftsmanship stands as a landmark in the history of China's hand-loom textile tradition. For her contributions, Huang Daopo is celebrated not only as a master innovator but also as a pioneering figure in cultural exchange, and is recognized by UNESCO as a world-class ancient female scientist.
