Huang Daopo Memorial Park
Located in Xuhui district, Huang Daopo Memorial Park honors one of China's most influential textile innovators from the late Song (960-1279) and early Yuan (1271-1368) dynasties.
Born in Wunijing, part of today's Xuhui district, Huang Daopo traveled in her youth to Hainan province, where she learned advanced local weaving techniques. After returning to her hometown, she shared this knowledge and went on to revolutionize cotton-textile tools, transforming the textile industry across the Jiangnan region and giving a strong boost to the local economy. Fabrics produced using her improved techniques later traveled along the Maritime Silk Road to Asia, Europe, and beyond, earning widespread acclaim.
Wunijing cotton-textile craftsmanship stands as a landmark in the history of China's hand-loom textile tradition. For her contributions, Huang Daopo is celebrated not only as a master innovator but also as a pioneering figure in cultural exchange, and is recognized by UNESCO as a world-class ancient female scientist.
Within the park
At the heart of the park lies the Huang Daopo Tomb, relocated and restored here in 1986. To the east stands the Huang Daopo Memorial Hall, opened in March 2003. To the west is the Practice Base of Wunijing Cotton Textile Technology, a center for research, heritage transmission, and hands-on public workshops.
Wunijing Huang Daopo hand-made cotton textile craftsmanship was inscribed on China's first national list of intangible cultural heritage in 2006. In 2022, Huang Daopo Memorial Park was designated as a national AAA-level tourist attraction.
