Shanghai shines as global gem for travelers
Shanghai is captivating the hearts of travelers from around the world with its magnetic charm and diverse offerings.
Over 4 million foreign travelers arrived in China via Shanghai's ports during the first 11 months of 2024, a twofold increase over the same period last year, according to the Shanghai General Station of Immigration Inspection.
The number of inbound tourists to Shanghai has grown by over 130 percent this year, according to online travel agency Ctrip. This surge is largely a result of China's recent visa-free policy, which allows travelers from 38 nations to visit China without applying for a visa. Shanghai is a favorite destination for travelers from the United States and Europe, as well as neighboring countries such as South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.
To cater to the influx of international tourists, Shanghai offers tailored services for a deeper cultural immersion.
Initiatives like Ctrip's free half-day tour lead transit passengers on a journey to iconic landmarks like the Bund, Yuyuan Garden, and the Wukang Road. This service, spanning five to six hours, has left a lasting impression on over 4,000 tourists since being launched in April.
Shanghai maintains its commitment to creating seamless and enriching experiences for travelers.
The city has introduced 36,000 new payment machines that can accept foreign cards, expanded luggage storage services in subway stations, and established three comprehensive services centers at both Pudong and Hongqiao airports to serve foreign visitors.
To meet the growing demand from overseas tourists for immersive travel experiences, Jinjiang International Travel, a major tour operator in China, has rolled out themed products ranging from food tours to photography expeditions and hiking trips. The offerings have produced a surge in inquiries, reflecting a shift towards more meaningful travel engagements.
Shanghai's vibrant cultural scene shines through its unique exhibitions and events. Audiences have flocked to both national events like the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix and the ChinaJoy expo, and global events such as the Shanghai Masters tennis tournament.
For culture enthusiasts, attractions like the Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, and Shanghai History Museum offer a glimpse into traditional Chinese heritage and the city's rich diversity.
Shanghai Museum's blockbuster exhibition, On Top of the Pyramid: The Civilization of Ancient Egypt, the largest exhibit on Egypt ever held in Asia, has attracted over 1 million visitors since June, including many from overseas.
Furthermore, Shanghai's theaters provide a stage for captivating performances, inviting tourists to immerse themselves in the city's vibrant entertainment culture. The city's six major performing arts hubs welcomed over 28 million foreign visitors from January to August.
