The latest edition of Shanghai's rehabilitation assistive devices catalogue came into effect on Dec 1, encompassing smart devices such as a companion robot to meet the demand for the city's growing silver population.

The companion robot, which is named "youni", offers functions such as conversational companionship, music and dance interactions, daily life assistance, and emergency alerts.

It can also connect with community-based third-party service providers to arrange accompaniment for medical appointments or home repairs, and even compile electronic memoirs through conversations.

The new catalogue also covers intelligent assistance equipment like electric nursing beds and wheelchairs, non-invasive ventilators, shower chairs, and anti-bedsore mats. Elderly residents aged 60 and above can enjoy subsidies of up to 70 percent on rentals.

By the end of 2024, the elderly population aged 60 and above with a local hukou (household registration) in Shanghai reached 5.78 million, accounting for 37.6 percent of the city’s total registered population.

To cater to their needs for rehabilitation assistive devices, Shanghai has established over 220 community rental stations, achieving full coverage across all 216 subdistricts and towns.
