Chongming Academy was a ceremonial complex dedicated to the veneration of Confucius, the great philosopher and educator of ancient China. For centuries, it also functioned as the island's principal government-supported school and its intellectual center, shaping generations of scholars and officials.

The academy's origins date back nearly 700 years to the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). Owing to the Chongming's shifting terrain, the complex was relocated several times before finally settling at its current site around 400 years ago, where it took on the complete and enduring form seen today.

As one of Chongming's most significant cultural landmarks, Chongming Academy underwent extensive restoration between 1996 and 2016. The site now covers more than 1.54 hectares and includes over 3,000 square meters of traditional architecture. It is recognized as a national AAA-level tourist attraction and a Shanghai-protected cultural heritage site.

Today, Chongming Academy serves not only as a place to explore Confucian culture and local history but also, with its refined ancient architecture and tranquil surroundings, as an ideal destination for visitors seeking a peaceful journey into the past and a deeper understanding of the island's cultural spirit.
