The GDP of Shanghai hit 5.39 trillion yuan ($740.7 billion) in 2024, with a year-on-year growth of 5 percent. The general public budget revenue totaled 837.42 billion yuan, up by 0.7 percent. The per capita disposable income of residents increased by 4.2 percent to 88,366 yuan. Total turnover of financial markets grew by 8.2 percent to 3,650 trillion yuan.

Total R&D expenditure was around 4.4 percent of the city's GDP. The number of high-value invention patents per 10,000 people rose to 57.9. The output of the three leading industries, namely integrated circuit (IC), biomedicine, and artificial intelligence (AI), totaled 1.8 trillion yuan.
