In 2024, the container throughput of Shanghai Port exceeded 51.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), ranking first in the world for the 15th consecutive year.

The city also holds the top position in the national foreign trade volume. The value of its foreign trade totaled 4.27 trillion yuan in 2024, marking a 1.3 percent year-on-year increase.
