Study Chinese in Shanghai: 2025 program opens at SISU Hongkou Campus

Shanghai International Studies University is now accepting applications for its 2025 Chinese Language Program at the Hongkou campus, offering immersive courses for learners of all proficiency levels.

 

I. Course arrangement

Comprehensive Chinese courses (morning sessions)

Four proficiency levels are available — beginner, elementary, intermediate, and advanced — covering grammar, conversation, listening, and Chinese character writing.

Free elective courses (afternoon sessions)

Elective courses include Shanghai dialect, Chinese character writing, phonetic practice, Chinese calligraphy, tai chi, Chinese paper cutting, and Chinese Corner activities.

 

II. Application deadline and registration

  • Application deadline for autumn semester: June 30, 2025
  • Registration dates: Sept 10–12, 2025
  • Course duration: Sept 22, 2025 to Jan 16, 2026

Completion certificates will be issued on Jan 18, 2026.

There are 20 teaching hours per week, with each teaching hour lasting 45 minutes.

Short-term transfer study is available for one to three months. Students can also join ongoing long-term advanced courses. Specific start dates will be indicated in the admission letter.

 

III. Eligibility

Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens who:

  • Are aged 18 to 50 (or 16 to 60 for short-term transfer students)
  • Hold a high school diploma or above
  • Are in good health
  • Have reliable financial support and legal guardianship

 

IV. Application documents

Please complete the online application form at http://apply.shisu.edu.cn.

Prepare the following materials in advance:

  • A copy of your graduation certificate
  • A copy of your passport
  • Application fee: 450 yuan (paid online) or $75 (via international transfer; payment receipt required)

Additional documents may be required during the review process. Application materials and fees are non-refundable.

VI. Special note

Short-term students who transfer during the semester are not eligible for on-campus accommodation. Please make your own housing arrangements.
