The six-week University of Hawaii Chinese Summer Program concluded on Aug 15 at Shanghai International Studies University, offering students an immersive Chinese learning experience.

Jointly organized by the two universities, the cultural exchange program has been running for seven years. Since its launch in 2019, participation has grown from six students to 16 this summer, with both its activities and participation steadily expanding.

Every summer, participants travel to Shanghai to strengthen their language skills through intensive Chinese learning courses while exploring the country's cultural diversity through campus life.

This year, many students received the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship from the Center for Language Education and Cooperation under the Ministry of Education, providing financial support to further enrich their experience.

The program blends language studies with cultural experiences and urban exploration. During the "Discovering Shanghai" activities, students enjoyed the Bund's nightscape, explored historical exhibitions at museums, and experienced traditional customs in Zhujiajiao Ancient Town. The "Live Like a Local for a Day" activity invited students into local communities, offering first-hand insights into everyday life in the city.

Student reflections

Brandon Low:

Coming to China is an eye-opening experience for me and has helped improve my Chinese. I had many opportunities to communicate with native Chinese speakers, so I can truly immerse myself in the culture. Coming from a small Pacific Island, life there is usually routine, but Shanghai is vibrant, full of activities and sightseeing spots. From the dazzling lights of the Bund to the bustling shopping district of Nanjing Road and the rich history at the Shanghai History Museum, there is never a dull moment here.

Ariel Hall:

Studying at SISU broadened my horizons and made me more open-minded. The experiences of learning about Chinese culture, making new friends along the way, and trying delicious food will remain some of my most lasting memories. I have learned so much about myself and the people around me, and I wouldn't change my experience for anything in the world. Thank you, SISU, and those who helped make this experience amazing. Until we meet again!  再见 (See you)!
