2024 Shanghai Marathon: Equipment pickup guide
The 2024 Shanghai Marathon, a candidate race for the Abbott World Marathon Majors, will start at 7 am on Dec 1.
This year's elite runner lineup will include Kenyan athlete Timothy Kiplagat, who set a personal best of 2:02:55 and finished in the second place at the 2024 Tokyo Marathon. This will be his first time competing in the Shanghai Marathon. Leading the women's elite runners is Meseret Belete Tola, coming in with a personal best of 2:18:21.
Other notable participants include Kinde Atanaw, Derseh Kindie, Philimon Kiptoo Kipchumba, Sisay Meseret Gola, and Tetsuya Yoroizaka. Chinese elite runners will also compete, including 2023 Shanghai Marathon champions Wu Xiangdong and Zhang Deshun.
The fitness run will finish at the Shanghai Exhibition Center, coinciding with the China 2024 Asian International Stamp Exhibition.
The wheelchair marathon will start earlier, at 6:45 am. The race route has been optimized for wheelchair participants, replacing the original Xuhui Riverside section with stretches on Ruining Road and Longteng Avenue. Accessible restrooms have been added at multiple points, and designated areas for wheelchair athletes have been set up at the start and finish lines.
The weather forecast for the morning of the race, as of Nov 25, calls for partly cloudy to sunny conditions, with temperatures between 9 and 15 C. To help runners cool down, six ice stations and eight spray stations will be set up along the route. Music stations along the route will increase from 10 to 16, playing upbeat selections from diverse genres to motivate the runners. The finish line will feature an LED screen arch and a custom track.
