Ironman 70.3 Shanghai Chongming set for May
The Ironman 70.3 Shanghai Chongming triathlon will take place on May 17 at Bright Tian Yuan in Chongming district, with nearly 1,500 athletes from 66 countries and regions expected to compete, setting new records for both participation and international diversity.
New corporate relay challenge
A brand-new Corporate Relay Challenge has been introduced, breaking away from the traditional individual race format and making it easier for more sports enthusiasts to take part in a top-tier Ironman event. Teams of two or three members will split the swim, bike, and run segments. The challenge also offers companies an opportunity to enhance brand visibility while promoting a culture of sport and teamwork.
More world championship slots
A total of 50 direct qualifying slots for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship (25 for men and 25 for women) will be awarded at the race, with the championship taking place on Sept 12 in Nice, France.
This year's event will adopt the new Ironman age-group ranking system, offering more equitable qualification opportunities across ages and gender categories, with a large allocation for female athletes. Alongside refinements to the professional and age-group categories, the timing and results system has been upgraded to deliver more accurate finish data and digital certificates.
Upgraded eco-friendly course
All three segments of the race have been enhanced while preserving their original ecological character. Stricter water quality standards provide a safer and more comfortable open-water swimming environment. The bike course continues along the Beiyan Highway scenic route, with improved roads and better signage. The run course features clearer lakes, ecological meadows, and vast flower fields, offering athletes a unique experience of racing through a beautiful landscape.
Enhanced facilities and support
The race command center is now fully integrated with the scenic area's video surveillance system, with additional high-definition cameras added to improve coordination and emergency response.
Parking capacity has been expanded, with additional spaces and improved traffic flow management to ease race day congestion. Medical support has also been strengthened, with more aid stations, upgraded emergency equipment, and an increased on-site medical presence.
