Collaborating with esteemed organisations like Italy's Florence Opera Theatre and France's Paris Opera Theatre, it has showcased world-class productions, such as Aida, Faust, Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet, and Don Quixote. It has also provided a platform for domestic theatres and troupes, hosting notable events like the Shanghai National Day Soiree and the China International Arts Festival.
Designed by acclaimed architect Jean-Claude Charpentier, the theatre's unique "crystal palace" style with upturned eaves and a stunning glass facade has made it an architectural gem. The 10-storey building features three theatres with a total capacity of over 2,000 seats.
