Wanping Theatre hosts summer intangible cultural heritage fair
To mark China's Cultural and Natural Heritage Day on June 13, Wanping Theatre in Xuhui district will host an immersive summer fair on June 13 and 14. The event will feature vibrant markets, flash mobs, costume and makeup experiences, and a range of other activities designed to bring traditional opera and intangible cultural heritage to life.
1. Heritage market
Nearly 20 vendors will gather at the market, offering handcrafted items such as thread-wrapped flower crafts, herbal sachets, ceramics, grain art, antique wood carvings, and crochet pieces. Major local opera troupes will also showcase their own themed cultural products.
When: June 13-14, 10:30 am – 5 pm
Where: Outdoor plaza of Wanping Theatre (moved to the 1st floor lobby in case of rain)
2. Journaling market
More than 40 independent artisans, illustrators, and craft brands will showcase tapes, stamps, scrapbooks, and collage materials, featuring both vintage and traditional Chinese designs. Visitors can collect stamps and design their own journal pages on site.
When: June 13-14, 10:30 am – 5 pm

3. Live opera flash mobs
Four flash mob performances will take place over the two days, featuring Peking Opera, Kunqu Opera, Yueju Opera, Shanghai Opera, Huaiju Opera, and pingtan storytelling, as well as Sichuan Opera stunts, children's performances, dances, musical numbers, and traditional Chinese instrumental performances.
When:
- June 13: 12:30-1 pm & 3-3:30 pm
- June 14: noon-12:30 pm & 3-3:30 pm
Where: Outdoor stage at the theatre's plaza
No reservations are required for the markets and flash mob performances. The event will also feature several free activities that require advance registration, including:
- Costume and makeup experience: Professional stylists will help participants dress in full hanfu attire or traditional opera costumes and apply matching makeup, offering them the opportunity to step into the role of an opera character.
- Opera class: Professional performers will introduce basic movements, spoken lines, singing, and fan techniques. Participants can follow along and gain hands-on experience.
- Intangible heritage craft workshop: Expert instructors will guide participants in creating opera-themed sachets or mother-of-pearl inlay crafts. Each participant can take home a handcrafted keepsake inspired by traditional heritage.
