Pudong airport sets record with breakthrough transit model
Shanghai Pudong International Airport handled 3,787 metric tons of international transit cargo in July, a monthly record and a year-on-year increase of 265 percent.
From January to July, transit volume rose to 13,368 tons, up 130 percent compared with the same period last year.
The growth follows the launch in March of China's first house waybill-level interline transfer model, which enables cargo to move between different airlines under separate master waybills, streamlining transfers and expanding routing options.
Pudong Customs has further cut clearance and transfer times to under 24 hours. The airport now operates 67 international transit routes.
The model was recently put to the test with a 1.6-ton shipment of laptops from Hanoi, Vietnam. The cargo, carried to Pudong by China Southern Airlines, was transferred to a United Parcel Service flight bound for Anchorage, United States, in just over 20 hours, showing efficient waybill changes across different airlines and customs zones.
