Smart cargo terminal begins operations at Pudong airport
A smart cargo terminal jointly funded and built by China Eastern Air Logistics Co Ltd and Shanghai Airport Authority Logistics Development Co Ltd was put into operation at Shanghai Pudong International Airport on June 3.
The terminal is part of Pudong airport's broader push for digital and smart transformation. The airport currently ranks second globally in cargo-and-mail throughput as Shanghai advances its development into an international aviation hub.
Covering an area of 220,000 square meters, the smart cargo terminal operates under an entrusted management model and has appointed Swissport International AG, a leading global provider of aviation ground and cargo services, as its operator.
According to Shanghai Airport Authority, the city's airports handled 4.5 million tons of cargo and mail in 2025, up 7.9 percent year-on-year. Flight movements, passenger throughput, and cargo-and-mail throughput all reached record highs.
The new terminal is expected to further enhance Shanghai's competitiveness and influence as an international air cargo hub, support the nation's high-level opening-up, and contribute to the stability and efficiency of global supply chains.
