Construction officially began on June 10 for a new facility of Siemens High Voltage Switchgear Ltd Shanghai, a subsidiary of Siemens Energy, in the Shanghai Minhang Economic and Technological Development Zone.

The project, which covers an area of about three hectares, is expected to be completed and put into operation by mid-2026.

Once operational, it will support the company's innovation roadmap and market expansion over the next decade.

"The project will focus on the research, development and manufacturing of environmentally friendly gas-insulated metal-enclosed switchgear," said Wu Jun, general manager of Siemens High Voltage Switchgear Ltd Shanghai. "Upon completion, the facility will serve as a global production and R&D center."

The new facility will leverage advanced technologies to enhance production efficiency. It will feature cutting-edge robotic automation, an intelligent warehousing and logistics system, end-to-end digital connectivity, and deep integration of artificial intelligence technologies.

Founded in 2001 by Siemens Energy and Shanghai Electric, Siemens High Voltage Switchgear Ltd Shanghai has become a leading player in China's high-voltage power equipment industry.

In February 2023, the company was officially recognized as a foreign-invested R&D center by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce.

Its high-voltage switchgear products are widely used across China and exported to more than 47 countries and regions across all five continents.

In recent years, the company has seen a rapid increase in orders and continuous optimization of its product structure, placing significant pressure on its existing production capacity.

To meet the growing demand, the company has worked closely with the development zone to launch a new round of capacity expansion and technological upgrades.

The project moved from initial concept to official groundbreaking in just one year, setting a new benchmark for the development zone in facilitating foreign investment.

  • Project intent was confirmed in June 2024.
  • The contract was signed in September 2024.
  • The land use rights were confirmed in March 2025.
  • The construction permit was obtained in May 2025.
  • Groundbreaking took place in June 2025.

This rapid progress reflects the high efficiency and strong professional support enabled by seamless coordination among the development zone, the company, and various levels of government.
