German specialty chemical producer Evonik announced the opening of its largest global center for medical device applications, designed to serve the entire Asian market, in Shanghai on July 9.

The state-of-the-art facility in Xinzhuang Industrial Park, Minhang district, focuses on the research and development, as well as the processing of semi-finished components for bioresorbable medical devices.

The center aims to help customers overcome challenges in developing high-quality, innovative medical solutions.

Headquartered in Essen, Germany, Evonik operates in over 100 countries and regions worldwide. In China, the company employs more than 2,700 staff members across 17 production sites and offices.

In 2024, Evonik recorded sales of 15.2 billion euros ($17.73 billion), with the Chinese market contributing a significant 1.4 billion euros.

Asia's medical device sector has experienced robust growth in recent years. In China, rising demand for advanced healthcare and high-end medical consumables is driving the industry forward at an annual growth rate exceeding 10 percent.

"The latest addition to our global technical service network can help more customers across Asia in reducing complexity, accelerating time to market, and improving medical device performance," says Yann d'Hervé, head of Evonik Health Care.

"The innovation of high-end medical devices plays a key role in the government's Healthy China 2030 initiative. Manufacturers are increasingly pursuing competitive raw materials and service solutions to differentiate themselves in the world's second-largest medical device market," added Xia Fuliang, president of Evonik China.

"Our new center is strategically aligned with these urgent market demands and contributes to the acceleration of industrial upgrading," he concluded.
