Editor's note: China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism has curated 82 national boutique rural tourism routes to enrich summer cultural and tourism experiences.

Among them, Shanghai offers three unique routes in its Jinshan, Fengxian, and Qingpu districts. Explore one of these captivating journeys below in Qingpu district.

With its renowned Zhujiajiao, Liantang, and Jinze ancient towns, Qingpu district proudly displays ancient charm and Jiangnan — the region south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River — culture through well-preserved bridges and historical sites.

Itinerary: Panlong Tiandi - Zhangyan Ancient Village - Zhujiajiao Ancient Town - Sun Island Resort - Dongshe village - Jinze Ancient Town

Transportation:

By car: Around 48 kilometers from downtown Shanghai, it takes about 70 minutes to get there.

Public transport: Accessible via Shanghai Metro Line 17 at Zhujiajiao Station.

Panlong Tiandi

Panlong Tiandi showcases the unique landscape of Jiangnan with its 10 historic bridges. The renovated Cheng Family Ancestral Hall and Panlong'an provide unique cultural experiences. Panlong Tiandi also features a specialty shopping area. Visitors can explore the area's rich heritage and enjoy the blend of tradition and modernity.

Zhangyan Ancient Village

A historic site located 2.5 kilometers northwest of Chonggu town, Zhangyan Ancient Village boasts over 1,000 years of history. This quaint village was a favored spot for intellectuals of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) like poet Su Shi and calligrapher Mi Fu. The village offers a glimpse into the past through its ancient halls, houses, and bridges, which include Huifu Bridge, Jinjing Bridge, and Zhaochang Bridge.

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

A peaceful town with ancient buildings, winding rivers, and stone bridges. Visitors can soak in the town's historical charm and enjoy the serene atmosphere.

Sun Island Resort

Sun Island Resort is a picturesque natural island hotel. Dongshe village

Surrounded by bamboo and waterways, Dongshe village features the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) Ruilong Bridge and the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) Zhuangyan Temple with ancient ginkgo trees. The village's "One Street, Two Corridors, Three Bridges, and Four Seasons" landscape, along with its rich folk culture, attracts global tourists to its picturesque setting.

Jinze Ancient Town

Jinze, with roots dating back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279) and reaching its peak during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), boasts a collection of ancient bridges spanning the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing eras, such as Puji Bridge, Ruyi Bridge, and Yingxiang Bridge. Jinze Ancient Town is known as the "Museum of Ancient Bridges" and the "Bridge Township of the Jiangnan". Be sure to visit the 700-year-old ginkgo tree in the Yihao Temple.
