Riders explore charm of ancient water town
Riders competing in the Shanghai leg of the 2025 FIM Motocross World Championship (MXGP), one of the world's premier off-road events, visited the Qingxi Old Street in Shanghai's Fengxian district on the afternoon of Sept 12, immersing themselves in the traditional culture and unique charm of an ancient water town.
Strolling along the stone-paved lanes, the riders were captivated by the ancient bridges and the whitewashed walls with black-tiled roofs, often pausing to take photos.
The highlight of the tour was a boat ride through the tranquil waterways. Boarding traditional wooden boats, the riders drifted along to the rhythmic sound of the oars, experiencing the poetic serenity of the water town.
"The Old Town is pretty nice, and the people are nice. I'm enjoying it," said rider Pauls Jonass.
After the boat ride, the riders visited the handicraft area of the old street, trying their hand at sugar painting and lacquer fan painting. The artisans' skillful demonstrations won admiration from the international visitors.
After trying lacquer fan painting, five-time MXGP champion Tim Gajser said: "You just put a couple of drops of colors inside, and then it makes a super nice painting. It's cool."
Although this was his third visit to Shanghai, he admitted the city still fascinates him. He recalled his Sept 11 visit to downtown Shanghai, describing the experience as "super nice".
Sept 12 also marked the 31st birthday of Dutch rider Jeffrey Herlings, for whom a surprise celebration was arranged. Following a dazzling face-changing performance, the crowd sang happy birthday as he was presented with a cake.
"When I saw everyone come out with the cake, I really appreciated it," he said.
Herlings was also struck by the cultural contrasts he saw.
"The buildings, the people, and the raised bridges are completely different. For us, it's quite shocking, although for you guys it's really normal. But it's a blessing to see it. So I really enjoy it."
