Songjiang's rice culture wows UN journalists

A delegation of journalists based in Geneva explored the rich agricultural heritage and innovative practices surrounding rice in Shanghai's Songjiang district on June 25.

The group, from the Association of Correspondents Accredited to the United Nations, visited the vast rice fields, the Rice Hug Intangible Cultural Heritage Experience Center, and a local rice processing facility in Xiaokunshan town.

Songjiang rice, recognized as a national Geographical Indication product, traces its rice-growing roots back over 5,000 years.

During the tour, the journalists admired the scenic countryside and gained insight into the origins and evolution of Songjiang rice.

They expressed deep appreciation for China’s enduring agricultural traditions and its world-leading modern farming technologies.

Dina Abi-Saab was particularly moved as she stood at a viewing pavilion overlooking the lush green paddies.

She remarked that it was the first time she had seen such expansive farmland, adding that despite many years in Lebanon and Switzerland and having seen plenty of fields, nothing quite compared to this.

At the Rice Hug cultural center, the delegation took part in a traditional handball embroidery workshop.

Abi-Saab said she had done some embroidery herself, but had never achieved that level of craftsmanship and finishing. Describing the works as "impressive", she added, "I was filming and taking videos to send to my mother and aunts."

The delegation also sampled a rice-based beverage made from Songjiang rice, which stirred nostalgic memories for journalist John Zarocostas.

"It reminded me of my childhood," he said, adding that his mother used to make something with a similar flavor.

At the rice processing plant, the journalists observed the full grain-to-product process and concluded the tour with a tasting of a creative rice-based drink: rice coffee.

The beverage was met with enthusiastic praise.

"I'm a big coffee fan, but I’ve never had anything this rich and smooth."

"This should be introduced to more places—it's something many people would enjoy."

"The balance between coffee and rice milk is just right. It's absolutely delicious. I hope to drink it again someday."

With the lingering aroma and creamy texture of rice coffee, the delegation wrapped up their visit to Songjiang on a flavorful and memorable note.
