Shanghai Electric to produce China's first batch of commercial green methanol
Shanghai Electric's integrated green methanol demonstration project, built in Taonan, Jilin province, will be completed and deliver its first batch of green methanol in July.
The fuel will then be transported to the Shanghai Port for bunkering, marking the realization of the first full-cycle commercial green methanol project in China — from R&D and production to application.
Green methanol is a type of methanol powered primarily by renewable energy sources. Its use can significantly reduce carbon emissions in the shipping industry.
With the rapid development of China's new energy industry, the country is poised to become a major producer of green methanol. According to third-party research institutions, the combined planned production capacity of green methanol by Chinese enterprises has already surpassed 10 million metric tons per year.
Launched in March 2024, the project is China's first commercial-scale green methanol initiative. With a total investment of 5.6 billion yuan ($779.8 million), the project is being built in two phases and is designed to reach a total production capacity of 250,000 tons.
The first phase, with a 50,000-ton capacity, is on track to produce its initial batch this July. Full capacity is expected to be reached by 2027.
All core technologies and critical equipment for the project were independently developed and manufactured by Shanghai Electric, filling the domestic technological gap and achieving globally advanced standards.
Looking ahead, the company intends to broaden its footprint in green fuel technologies, including green ammonia and sustainable aviation fuel.
