The Bund has been a symbol of Shanghai's development and prosperity for more than 100 years. It is a miniature of modern China's development in politics, economic growth and social culture, and a symbolic area in modern China where modernity meets culture.

The historic and cultural Bund in the city's central district was the site of Shanghai's earliest development, and its eye-catching spots and exquisite, densely grouped historical buildings have earned it a world-class reputation.

The Bund has many well-known classic buildings in a variety of styles including Baroque, Gothic and Ancient Greek – also known as "an exhibition of world architecture".
Within the Bund historical area, there are four bridges crossing the Suzhou Creek. Three of them – Waibaidu Bridge, or the Garden Bridge of Shanghai, Sichuan Road Bridge and Zhapu Road Bridge – are listed as excellent historical buildings, the only bridges in central Shanghai with that distinction.
