With a history of more than 800 years, Xinchang was a prosperous salt market in ancient times.
Visitors can explore traditional houses, serene courtyards and quaint commercial edifices from the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) as well as Western-style villas and modern religious structures.
Xinchang is renowned for numerous intangible cultural heritage items, including Shanghai gong-drum storytelling, Pudong pipa (a four-stringed Chinese lute), and Jiangnan sizhu (traditional stringed and woodwind instruments).
It also served as the setting for such cinematic masterpieces as Lust, Caution, See You Tomorrow, and Ip Man.
While you're there, don't miss the "first teahouse", a Qing Dynasty gem renovated in the 1920s and now a popular filming spot, notably featured in Lust, Caution.
