With a history tracing back to before the Song Dynasty(960-1279), Zhujiajiao flourished during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties – reaching its zenith during the Republic of China period(1912–49).

The town's evolution from a modest village market to a thriving commercial hub can be traced back to the Song Dynasty, while remnants of early residential growth are reflected in the ancient temples, such as Yuanjin Buddhist Temple and Cimen Temple from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368).

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Zhujiajiao experienced a renaissance, fueled by the prosperity of the cotton textiles industry and a flourishing artisan community. Then the late Qing Dynasty witnessed a golden age for the town, marked by burgeoning business enterprises like the Zhupu Electric Lamp Factory.

The Republic of China era ushered in further advancements in rice milling and oil processing, propelling Zhujiajiao's agricultural and commercial sectors to new heights. Concurrently, the town's cultural and educational landscape blossomed, giving rise to institutions and cultural venues that enriched the community.

Designated as a historical and cultural block in Shanghai in 2005, Zhujiajiao continues to captivate visitors from far and wide.
